== Purpose ==<br />
This template links to a [[Wikipedia:User pages|user page]], or to multiple user pages, without triggering the [[Wikipedia:Notifications|notification system]]. It is not necessary to use this template if you are not [[Wikipedia:Signatures|signing your post]], as Notifications mentions only work with a signature included.<br />

== Consequences ==<br />
The template avoids notifications by making external links with code like <code><nowiki><span class="plainlinks">[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Username username]</span></nowiki></code> instead of wikilinks like <code><nowiki>[[User:Username|Username]]</nowiki></code>. An external link icon is avoided with <code><nowiki>plainlinks</nowiki></code> but there are other consequences of not using a wikilink. The link will not be [[WP:RED|red]] for non-existing user pages, the blue link will have a lighter [[Help:Link color|color]] than usual for most readers, and the page the template is used on will not appear at [[Special:WhatLinksHere]] for the user page. The link is recognized by [[WP:POPUPS|Navigational Popups]], which handles it the way it would handle other links.<br />
