Who We Are

Created to Advise the NationThe National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine provide independent, objective advice to inform policy with evidence, spark progress and innovation, and confront challenging issues for the benefit of society.[file:///native baseline]Our Organization
The work of the private, nonprofit National Academies is grounded in the expertise of ourthree honorific societies— the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Most of this work is conducted throughseven major program areas of the National Academies.

Our LeadershipLearn moreabout the presidents of our three Academies and our executive team. Each Academy is governed by its own council elected from the Academy's membership. The National Research Council, the operating arm of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, is overseen by a governing board that consists councilors from each of the three Academies. Among the world's most distinguished scientists, engineers, and health care professionals, our membersare essential to the work we do.
Our VolunteersEach year, approximately 6,000 top experts in their fields — including but not limited to members of the Academies — volunteer their time and extensive knowledge to conduct our policy studies, workshops, symposia, and other activities.Learn more about our volunteers.
Our HistoryTo meet the government's urgent need for an independent adviser on scientific matters, President Lincoln signed a congressional charter forming theNational Academy of Sciences in 1863. Under the same charter, the Academy eventually expanded to include the National Academy of Engineeringin 1964, and theNational Academy of Medicine, which was established in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine.Learnmore about our history.
Give to the Academies

Although many of our activities are requested and funded by Congress and federal agencies, we do not receive direct appropriations from the federal government. Foundations, the private sector, and philanthropy from individuals enable us to address critical issues on behalf of the nation.Make a gift to the National Academies.</section>
