Tom Friedman has held over a lengthy period of time in roles such as

New York City Health Commissioner, 2002 to 2009

CDC Director, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Administrator, 2009–2017

Friedman has had a major impact on combustible tobacco Smoking policy along with opposition to Safer Nicotine Products, heavily influenced throughout, by his former employer the Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg with whom Friedman shares the same vision of a nicotine-free future.

In its excellent History of Vaping Casaa uncovered this

U.S. Inspector General's office issued an "Early Alert" letter to Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding whether the CDC was illegally using federal funds tied to wellness programs to encourage local communities to adopt a bevy of tobacco restrictions. (Original letter extracted from a file found on the site, the full file which can be downloaded here.) see the letter here This is just the tip of a very large iceberg, where CDC routinely advances negative propaganda towards all nicotine products, invariably with greater emphasis on the safer nicotine variety, rather than on the vastly more harmful combustible variant.
