When used with the "Redirect category shell" (Rcat shell) template:
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
- Template Redirect category shell may be used to add one or more rcat templates, along with their parameters and categories, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation page below.
When used by itself:
- From outside userspace: This is a redirect from a page outside the user namespace to a user page (not to a user talk page). If this redirect targets a user talk page, then use R to talk page instead. This redirect page must be outside the user namespace. If this redirect is in the user namespace, then instead of the expected category, it will populate Category:Pages with templates in the wrong namespace.
This template should not be substituted nor used to tag soft redirects. |
If you plan to make breaking changes to this template, move it, or nominate it for deletion, please notify Twinkle's users and maintainers at Wikipedia talk:Twinkle as a courtesy, as the standard installation of Twinkle adds and removes this template. Thank you! |
Purpose
This redirect category (rcat) template sorts redirects into two categories:
- Category:Redirects to user namespace – for cross-namespace redirects, and
- Category:Unprintworthy redirects – only redirects from the main-article namespace (mainspace)
- In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Mainspace redirects that target pages in the user namespace are not suitable for a printed version. In other words they are unprintworthy.
Please do not alter the printworthy settings of this rcat without first notifying the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, who are responsible for any and all materials, including redirects, that go into a printed version of Wikipedia.
This rcat is not for use on redirects that are in the user namespace. If placed on a redirect that is a user page, it will not populate the expected categories; it will instead be sorted to Category:Pages with templates in the wrong namespace.
Usage
Use this rcat template in any namespace except user namespace.
- Apply this rcat to a redirect in the following manner:
#REDIRECT User:(target page name) R to user namespace
- and when the redirect is in article mainspace, printworthiness should also be tagged:
#REDIRECT User:(target page name) R to user namespace R unprintworthy
- Template Rcat shell is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
#REDIRECT User:(target page name) R to user namespace
- This is in accord with instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.
- Use this rcat to tag any redirect from a page outside of user namespace to a page in user namespace. This rcat should never be used to tag a redirect in user namespace that targets any other page.
- As noted, this rcat may be used to categorize a user talk-page redirect that targets a user page, however it should never be used to tag a redirect that targets a user talk page nor any talk page.
