Usage
Use this rcat template on mainspace redirects only.
- This redirect category (rcat) template populates subcategories of Category:Redirects from sort names depending on its sortkeys (see below), and it also populates Category:Printworthy redirects by default. In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Redirects from sort names are usually suitable for a printed version. In other words they are printworthy. See below for what to do for those few redirects that are not suitable for a printed version.
Please do not alter the printworthy settings of this rcat without first notifying the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, who are responsible for any and all materials, including redirects, that go into a printed version of Wikipedia.
- Add this rcat to a redirect page (not a talk-page redirect) in the following manner:
#REDIRECT (target article title)
- Template Rcat shell is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
#REDIRECT (target article title)
- This is in accord with instructions found at WP:REDCAT.
- Use this rcat to tag all mainspace redirects that are used to sort people by surname (family name) first, followed by their given name, such as "Smith, John". Another use is to sort bands by name first, followed by the leading grammatical article, such as Beatles, The
The Beatles.
- This rcat tags redirects with a subcategory of Category:Redirects from modifications, so template R from modification should not be used with this rcat.
Parameters
- As shown above, two category sortkeys should be added whenever this rcat tags a redirect. The first parameter's sortkey is the first letter of the redirect title. For example, on the redirect Roberts, Julia the first sortkey is "R" (sortkeys are always in uppercase capital letters, please). The second parameter's sortkey is the first letter of the target article, in this case Julia Roberts, so the second sortkey is "J". Please remember to include these sortkeys. This example would appear as follows:
- Roberts, Julia (page title of redirect)
#REDIRECT Julia Roberts
- In this example, the redirect populates the following categories:
Printability
- Use parameter
|printworthy=no
to populate Category:Unprintworthy redirects. Otherwise these redirects will be sorted as printworthy (the default).
